2022 Winter Olympic torch: Flying

　The torch of the Bejing 2022 Winter Olympics, named “Flying”, made its first public appearance on February 4th, 2021 to mark the start of the one-year countdown1 to the opening of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

　The torch looks like two flying ribbons. The red ribbon inside is like rising flames2. As the torch turns, the hidden red one seems to stretch3 endlessly, showing people’s love for brightness, peace, excellence and the values encouraged by the Olympic Movement.

　On the outside of the torch, we can see the Beijing 2022 emblem4 and the Olympic rings on its central part, with patterns of clouds and snowflakes painted from the bottom up to the flame. The two-color design presents ice and fire, showing how it will bring light and warmth to the winter sports meeting.

　Sharing the same design, the torch for the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games uses two colors: gold and silver. The design allows both torches to lock into each other at the top when one person passes the flame to another during the torch relay. It symbolizes Bejing 2022’s good wishes to improve understanding and respect between different cultures.

　When talking about the inspiration of the design, Li Jianye, the designer of the torch, shared more information. “The torch will give us a feeling of continuous growth. I hope this design can pass on a message of lighting a fire of hope for the world.”

　Using a burning system developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the torch’s flame can burn in all weather conditions, including strong winds and extremely low temperatures.
