The One and Only Ivan is a novel by Katherine Applegate. Narrated(讲述) by Ivan, a sliver-back gorilla(银背大猩猩), it tells a touching story of friendship between Ivan and a baby elephant named Ruby.
Ivan is a gorilla who has been held captive(被圈养的) in a mall for 27 years. He watches TV, eats bananas and makes art sold in the gift shop. Ivan promises Stella, an old elephant, that he will help Ruby to have a brighter future than that at the mall.
After Stella’s death, Ivan starts to think a lot more about his early life. He remembers his life in the jungle(丛林), how humans killed his parents, and how he and his sister were brought to the human world.
How can Ivan help Ruby get out of the mall? Where will she go if he does?

This book is one of my favourites because it shows how alike(相像的) animals and humans really are. We all long for happiness and freedom, family and friends. We share this world, but think about it: Who are we to hold animals captive? Who are we to hurt them? Who are we to take away their homes when we hate losing our own homes? This book reminds us that humans and animals should live in peace and harmony(和谐).
