Koala’s cool idea for hot summer
Do you know how koalas spend the hot summer? During the hot summer in Australia, scientists find something unusual1. As the temperature rises2, koalas climb down from the treetop and hug trees. Why do koalas do that? “Koalas can’t sweat3. So it’s hard for them to stay cool in hot summer,” says one scientist. “But we find that koalas have their own way to stay cool in hot summer.”
The study shows that koalas hug trees to keep cool. In hot summer, tree trunks4 are about 9℃ cooler than the air around. That’s why koalas hug trees in hot weather.
By hugging the cooler trees, koalas can feel cool. This can also help koalas keep water in their bodies. Surely, hugging trees is a wonderful way for koalas to spend the hot summer!
