The Giver (《赐予者》), by US writer Lois Lowry, is a dystopian fiction about a 12-year-old boy named Jonas who lives in a world where everything is controlled to be the same. There is no pain, no war(战争), but also no real feelings. When Jonas is chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory, he meets The Giver, an old man who holds all the memories of the past. That’s when Jonas discovers the beauty and pain of the real world.
The Giver makes us think about what life would be like without feelings. It also teaches us the importance of questioning the world around us.
The Giver won Lowry her second Newbery Medal, a US award(奖)for the best children’s book of the year, in 1994. Her first was in 1990 for Number the Stars (《数星星》), about a young Jewish girl helping people get away from Nazis in Denmark during World War II.
