After three years in the making and 160 million dollars (about 1.2 billion yuan) spent, the Netflix drama 3 Body Problem(《三体》) finally came out on March 21, 2024. Based on the award-winning Chinese science fiction novel by Liu Cixin, the TV series tells the story of how humanity’s future changes after scientist Ye Wenjie decides to answer an alien signal(信号). A life-and-death struggle(挣扎) starts between human civilization(文明) and the San-Ti civilization.
To fit the story into just eight episodes(集), the show was adapted(改编) a lot. Much of the novel’s background information has been cut. But each episode introduces conflict(冲突) to keep the show interesting. For example, in the first episode, the alien invaders (入侵者) tell the scientists to stop their research against invasion, or they will see a countdown to their doom(劫难) appear in their eyes.
As for setting and character development, the show changed the story’s background from China to modern London. Five scientists from Oxford University are the main characters. The personality(个性) and role of Wang Miao, the hero of the novel, can be found in these five characters. The show also turns separate characters into a group of friends.
A Washington Post article noted that the series might not keep the unique style of the novel, but it has excellent character development. It also explores deep philosophical(哲学的) ideas. The closeness feels so real, so does the despair (绝望).
