El Deafo

  El Deafo (《超听侠》) is a heartwarming book. The graphic novel  for all ages to enjoy. It’s about the young Cece Bell as she goes through her childhood in a small town with trouble hearing.

　 Bell loses her hearing at the age of 4. When Bell starts first grade, she is given a special hearing aid(助听器) to help her hear better at school. The Phonic Ear has a special microphone(麦克风) for her teacher to wear, so whenever she talks, Bell can hear loud and clear. She can hear her teacher in the whole school building, no matter what she’s doing! She’s like a superhero, with the power of super hearing! So she gives herself a superhero name—El Deafo. She rises above her worries about her hearing and her hearing aids, as well as her problems with friends.

　It’s funny in a way that anyone can enjoy, and it looks at real problems, like discrimination(歧视) with fun-filled art and humor(幽默). This story makes us think about how we would act in similar situations and helps us understand and care about other people.
