In 2008, Zhang Guimei, a hard-working teacher, founded a free girls-only senior high school in Huaping county, Yunnan province. Over the past 16 years, she has helped over 2,000 girls from poor villages to go to university. Her story, made into a TV series named She and Her Girls(《山花烂漫时》), has been well-received since it came out on Sept. 10, 2024.
The series is successful because it feels real. Instead of showing Zhang’s life to be one full of pain, it focuses on her strength(力量) to deal with problems. In the poor villages of Huaping county, people believe it’s pointless(没有意义的) for girls to receive an education. Because of this, many girls are forced to drop out of school at a young age. To help them come back to school, Zhang and other teachers make many home visits. They never give up, even when villagers are unsupportive.
From raising money to enrolling(招收) students, Zhang meets problems every step of the way. However, she is always ready for whatever life throws at her. Showing Zhang’s ability to face challenges head-on, the series tells her story in an inspiring(鼓舞人心的) way that wins people’s hearts.
The series breathes new life into Zhang’s story by showing her strength and positivity(积极性). It tells us that the life of a great person should not only be seen as one of going through hard times. Instead, it’s a life that is both hard and beautiful.
