The Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar1 month.
Besides watching lanterns and guessing the lantern riddles2, there are many other traditions for the festival.
Dragon and lion dances
Chinese people see the dragon as a symbol of good wishes and good luck, and the lion as a symbol of bravery and strength. At the festival, people perform dragon dance and lion dance and look forward to good weather and peace.
Eating yuanxiao
Yuanxiao is also called tangyuan. We all eat yuanxiao on this festival. Its round shape symbolizes wholeness. Its sweet taste is a symbol of sweet and happy life. Tangyuan sounds like tuanyuan, meaning “reunion3”. So it is a symbol of family reunion, harmony4, and happiness.
