Godzilla rises again in the new movie Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire(《哥斯拉大战金刚:帝国崛起》), which came out in Chinese mainland(大陆) theaters on March 29. Have you ever wondered what exactly Godzilla is? As one of the most famous monsters(怪兽) in pop culture, Godzilla first showed up in the Japanese movie Godzilla in 1954. In the movie, Godzilla follows its Japanese name-Gojira. It’s a mix of two words. “Gorira’ sounds like “gorilla”, and “kujira” means “whale” in Japanese. This name well shows the features of this monster, because Godzilla looks like a huge lizard(蜥蜴) that can live in water and on land.Gareth Edwards is the director of the 2014 movie. He told PCMag website that the design of the 2014 Godzilla also took ideas from bears, dogs and eagles(鹰). “What is Godzilla really? He’s King of the Monsters,” he said. In the 1954 movie, Godzilla comes out of the sea to attack(攻击) people after nuclear bomb(核弹) tests. It can fire nuclear energy(能量) from its mouth.
As such, Godzilla shows the Japanese people’s fear and anger at nuclear power. The monster acted as a metaphor(隐喻) for the nuclear bombs and what they did to Japan’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II, noted CBR website.
