A Traveler Sees No Boundaries (《行者无疆》) by Yu Qiuyu is a book about travel and culture. It’s about Yu’s travels in over 96 famous cities over the whole of Europe, including Paris and Venice.
The book shows the writer’s great curiosity(好奇心) and his understanding of foreign cultures. Chinese writer Jia Pingwa said that Yu’s cultural research is very creative.
One of the most amazing parts of the book is Yu’s visit to Rome, known as one of the most romantic(浪漫的) cities. The trip didn’t start well. When Yu arrived in Rome, he found that there were almost no people. Then after talking with an elderly(年老的) couple, he found out most of the locals were on a long holiday. How interesting! Yu’s words transport(使身临其境) the readers to the streets of Rome, where ancient buildings still stand with modern buildings, creating a mix of old and new. Yu also shows the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western cultures to add more depth to his writing.
All in all, this is a book that encourages us to embrace(拥抱) the unknown.
