Wang Yan, a student at China’s Northeastern University, walks along the streets of the city, hunting for hidden bookstores where she can read quietly.
“Each bookstore has its unique features1, helping us experience the beauty of the city and read a good book,” says Wang.
Recently, “City Read” has become popular on Chinese social media platforms. This planned exploration of cities, by checking in at urban bookstores, allows young people to explore urban changes, history, culture, and fashion through a new way of reading.
Many young people introduce various bookstores and share stories of achieving “reading freedom” and “self-study freedom” right at their doorsteps.
And more importantly, bookstores can better meet young people’s emotional2 needs in this digital3 age. When you are reading, it’s like you are running with the writer, and your own creativity will come into being while running along.
