Saving Dagu Glacier

Wang Feiteng and his team are working hard to save Dagu Glacier1, one of China’s most endangered2 glaciers. Every year, they cover parts of the ice with special white fabric3 to send back sunlight, and use snow machines to slow melting. But even with this hard work, the glacier—as large as 56 football fields now—keeps getting smaller. Wang says, “If we don’t act now, Dagu Glacier could disappear by 2029.”
There are about 69,000 glaciers in China. In the past 60 years, over 7,000 have disappeared. Dagu Glacier sits in Southwest China and is one of the lowest and most famous glaciers in the world. Sadly, it is melting faster than ever. About 70% of it has disappeared.
 If Dagu Glacier disappears,
it could be very bad for the ecosystem. Rivers may dry up, animals will lose their homes, people will lose much fresh water, and there could be climate changes.Winter will be shorter and summer will be hotter. The melting ice can cause floods and other dangers for the people living nearby.
To save glaciers, everyone must help protect the earth. Scientists say cutting down on pollution and using clean energy are the key. Wang’s team can’t solve every problem by themselves. “We’re just a few scientists,” he explains, “but if our work makes more people care about glaciers, that would be great.” Let’s all do our part to keep our planet cool and safe for the future!
