The Chinese have been good at dyeing, weaving, and embroidering for a long time. Shu embroidery1, from the area around Chengdu in Sichuan Province, is one of the most famous types of embroidery in China.Shu embroidery is very old and has a long history. As early as the Spring and Autumn Period, silk products from the Sichuan plain were sent to other countries in Asia, and the art of Shu embroidery grew along with the silk trade. In the
Han Dynasty, Shu embroidery was known as “a treasure of Sichuan”.
Shu embroidery is known for its beautiful stitches2. There are over 100 different stitching and weaving techniques in 12 groups. It is one of the four famous embroideries of China. The embroidery is smooth, bright, and neat, and is influenced by the geography, customs, and culture of Sichuan.
People admire Shu embroidery for its fine workmanship. The stitches are so close together that they can show tiny details in pictures. A piece of Shu embroidery may have hundreds of thousands of stitches in a single image or animal, and it can take days or weeks to finish.
Shu embroidery is used to decorate many things, like quilts, pillowcases, clothes, curtains, and wall hangings. The designs often include flowers, animals, mountains, rivers, and people. These beautiful items are meant to bring happiness and good luck to the people who own them.
