Li brocade, created by the Li people of Hainan Island, has a history of about 3,000 years. The hard-working and talented Li people have been making and wearing it for centuries.Making a piece of Li brocade involves four steps and can take three to four months or even longer. Unlike silk fabrics1 such as Shu brocade, the materials used to make Li brocade come from local plants.
A village fashion show in Wuzhishan, Hainan Province went viral, attracting over 40,000 visitors and more than 580,000 online views. Many of them were learning about Li brocade for the first time and were curious about it. Later such fashion shows often took place in the village.
The Li people also have other ways to pass on this ancient weaving2 skill. In Wuzhishan, there are 22 learning centres with more than 3,500 people skilled in Li brocade weaving.
Li brocade appeared even on the stage of the Paris Fashion Show in France. When the models wearing clothes made of Li brocade walked on the runway, all eyes focused on them. It surprised people from different countries with its special design and rich culture. It is certain that Li brocade will be loved by more people around the world.
In 2009, Li brocade was added to the list of intangible cultural heritage3. Today, the local government and people are working hard to protect it.
