Start of Summer1, or Lixia, the 7th solar term of the year, begins this year on May 5 and ends on May 20.
The climate changes are the first to tell us summer is coming. Temperatures keep going up, and thunderstorms become more common. The saying “During Lixia and Xiaoman, rivers are full” perfectly describes the plentiful rainfall during this period. Mole crickets2 start singing, earthworms3 work hard in the soil, and snake gourds4 grow strongly creating the three unique signs of Lixia.
For farming, Lixia is a busy time. Farmers are busy transplanting rice seedlings and taking care of crops. The old saying “Plant more rice seedlings during Lixia, and you’ll have a good harvest” shows how important it is to seize the right time for farming.
There are also many interesting customs and ways to stay healthy. People weigh themselves, hoping to keep good health. Children love playing the egg-fighting game, which shows the wisdom of preventing heatstroke. To fit in with the season, people are advised to eat light food. Lixia is not just a solar term; it holds the secrets of nature and the wisdom of life.
