Black bears

If you ever see a bear in the wild, it’s probably a black bear. People call it black bear, but it doesn’t mean it is always black. It can be brown, red, or even white. These small, shy bears usually live in forests and wood land areas.

The black bears are about 2 meters long and 1 meter high. They have small eyes, round ears, a long brown nose, a large body and a short tail. Male black bears weigh between 75 and 150 kilos. Females are smaller.

Black bears mostly feed on1 plants, honey and fruits. But they also eat fish and small animals. Black bears can swim well and run really fast. They can run up to 30 miles an hour. Usually black bears are afraid of people. If they lose their fear of people, they will be dangerous.

Black bears are good moms. If they have babies, they will wake up early to look after their babies. They feed and protect their babies well. If danger comes, mama black bears will put their babies in a tree.
