When a group of rabbits face the destruction of their home by humans in rural Southern England, they flee Fiver and his brother Hazel set out with nine other rabbits in search of a mysterious promised land and confront many dangers during their journey. Along the way, the rabbits will discover that maybe they aren’t so different—or more natural—than humans after all.
Man and the natural world is a central theme in the 1972 novel Watership Down by UK writer Richard Adams. Humans are depicted(描绘) as unnatural, a destructive force against nature. The rabbits’ goal is to live naturally, and most of them cannot understand why others wouldn’t want to live that way. However, there is also the risk that nature itself will become unnatural—whether that may be because of humans or even other rabbit communities.
In this excerpt, the noisiness of human society interferes(干扰) with the peaceful world of nature—except for Watership Down.
