Traditional music in China
Traditional Chinese music can be traced back to around 8,000 years ago during the Neolithic age1. The concept of music stands among the oldest categories of Chinese thought. Chinese music has always been interacting with different cultures throughout the long history.
High Mountain and Flowing Water is one of the most famous classic music pieces in China. It is widely known in China because of the legendary friendship between qin master Yu Boya and woodcutter Zhong Ziqi during the Spring and Autumn period. Thus High Mountain and Flowing Water is also used to describe cherished friendship2 in Chinese culture.
Listening to the Qin is a famous painting by Zhao Ji, Emperor Huizong of Song. This painting depicts a scene in which one man is playing the qin under a pine tree and two officials are enjoying the performance.
