A leaf before the eye shuts out Mount Tai

　Once there was a poor man. He never worked hard, but always thought about getting rich overnight.

One day, he read in a book that the mantis¹ would hide under a leaf when it was going to catch an insect. No one could find it. He wanted a leaf like that.

　So he ran into the forest to look for such a leaf. Finally he seemed to find one. But he was in such a big hurry that the leaf dropped to the ground. There were so many leaves on the ground. The man couldn’t tell which one was the right leaf, so he carried all the leaves home.

　At home, he held a leaf in front of his eyes and asked his wife, “Can you see me?” His wife answered, “Yes.” Then he tried one leaf after another and kept asking the same question. His wife became impatient and said, “No, I can’t see you now!”

　Hearing that, the man became excited and ran to the market. Covering his eyes with the leaf, he took things from a shop. Finally he was caught and taken to the judge.

　The judge listened to the man’s story and laughed, saying, “A leaf before your eyes makes you blind to Mount Tai!”
