Painting with grains

   Did you know that seeds can be used to make beautiful paintings? Dongming grain painting¹ is a good example.

　Dongming grain painting has a history of more than 200 years. In 2016, it was named Shandong’s intangible cultural heritage.

　In the past, people gave grain paintings as important gifts when it was time for the “Three Life Sacrifices²”.

　Han Guorui, 44, started learning Dongming grain painting when he was 8. During these years, he saw the art become less popular.

　People are losing interest in it, maybe because it takes much time and work to make one. It usually takes 27 steps, and some seeds are difficult to get. For example, Han spent five years growing red corn for making plum blossom petals³.

　To keep people interested, Han came up with some new ideas. And it’s working too. In 2014, he made a grain painting of the Mona Lisa. It sold for 10,000 yuan!
