The Lion Dance is one of the most popular arts in China. People usually perform the Lion Dance on festivals and some important days. In Chinese culture, the lion is seen as a mascot1, and it can bring good luck. The Lion Dance started from the Han Dynasty and got popular in the Southern and Northern Dynasties. It has a history of over 2,000 years. During the Tang Dynasty, the Lion Dance got into the royal2 family.

When people perform the Lion Dance, there are always two dancers. One plays the lion head and the other plays the lion body and tail. There are two main types: the Northern Lion Dance and the Southern Lion Dance. The Northern Lion Dance usually appears as a family, with two “parent” lions and a pair of “young” lions. People can enjoy kung fu, dance and music in the Southern Lion Dance. The dancers try hard to act like a lion. The Guangdong Lion Dance is a kind of Southern Lion Dance.

The Lion Dance is popular not only among Chinese people but also around the world. Jack is an American student and he is studying in China now. He thinks the Lion Dance is exciting and interesting. “Many of my American friends also enjoy it because they can learn a lot about the Chinese culture from it,” says Jack.
