In Lishi Village, Neihuang County, Henan Province, there is a special reading space named Weiguang Library. It was started by Li Cuili, the owner of a small store in the village.
Li’s idea for the library came from her love for her son. One day, she took her son to a show in their village. After the show started, the more she watched, the more she felt something was wrong. Then she decided to do something meaningful for the children in the village. She opened a small library in her store with about 500 books and let villagers read for free. She believed books could help children learn and grow.
At first, people thought Li was strange and no one came to borrow books. Li began to give candy to children if they came to read, borrow books and write book reviews. Soon, more children visited, and their parents noticed the change. Over time, the villagers began to speak highly of Li and support her library. Many adults began borrowing books as well and even volunteered to help at the library.
As more people came to read at her library, Li faced new problems. Some books were lost or got damaged. Li had to spend a lot of money buying new books, but they were still not enough. Then she rode a tricycle around town to collect old books. Sometimes, Li felt tired and wondered if it was worth it. But when a little girl told her that she wanted to open a library too, Li knew she was making a difference.
Now, the library has over 5,000 books and it is more than a place to read. Villagers come to read, learn, and do fun activities. “Even a small light can shine brightly in the dark,” Li says. Li hopes her library will continue to bring knowledge and joy to the village for years.
