A drone program

    At Shenzhen Bao’an Middle School (Group), Haibin Middle School in Guangdong, a special course is helping students’ dreams take flight. The school has introduced a drone¹ program that mixes science and engineering.
　“We are starting a drone class to follow the national plan for AI education,” said teacher Zhang Yunyun.
　“Drones bring together many subjects. By using them, students can learn about machines, coding and how air works, while also improving their thinking and practical skills.”
　Students first learn about drone structure and flight rules. They then write code to control drones and practise flying them. For those who are ready, there is even special training for competitions. Student Yang Bailiang, 13, joined the class with a big dream: “I hope drones can solve real problems. For example, fire trucks² can’t always reach the top of skyscrapers³, but drones can. I want to learn about drones to help people.”
　Student Xie Yuqi, 13, remembers his first flight: “I was nervous at first, but when the drone lifted off smoothly, I felt excited.” He added with a laugh, “If I recommend⁴ this course to friends, I’ll say come and enjoy both the crashes⁵ and the successes!”
　For the students, the biggest gain is confidence and creativity. “When students make drones fly the way they planned, that success changes how they see themselves,” said Zhang.
