The Qingming Festival is one of the traditional Chinese festivals. Its name comes from the clear and bright weather of the season—the sky is clear, and the scenery becomes vivid—which is why it is called Qingming (meaning “clear and bright”).It usually occurs on April 4th or 5th every year. It is an important time for Chinese people to pay respect to their ancestors1 and remember loved ones who have passed away. On this day, people clean the graves by removing weeds and offering food, and other offerings to show their respect.
It is also a good time to enjoy spring. In Chinese, this is called Taqing. As spring arrives, people enjoy the warm weather and blooming flowers by picnicking, hiking, and appreciating2 the natural scenery.
Another popular activity during the Qingming Festival is flying kites. What makes it special is that some people cut the string while the kite is still in the sky, letting it fly away freely. It is said that this brings good luck and helps to ward off diseases.
Customs such as tomb sweeping, paying respect to ancestors, and eating qingtuan have been passed down through generations. The Qingming Festival not only reflects Chinese people’s respect for their ancestors but also symbolizes3 hopes and blessings for new life.
