Think about this: you walk into a noisy food market, full of fresh fruits and vegetables, and then you see a quiet bookstore just steps away. Inside the bookstore, people of all ages are enjoying the joy of reading. These years, bookstores in markets are springing up1 across China. A new bookstore in Wenzhou’s Shuanglingkou Market has become popular quickly. The name of the bookstore is “Pan Cai Sheng”. It sells books about food and cooking. There is also a special shelf for “Wenzhou Food” with hard-
to-find books, showing local food history and culture. People often visit the bookstore after buying groceries. Some parents bring their children here. They talk about what to cook for lunch, find a recipe in books, and then buy ingredients in the market. In Chengdu, 329 markets have reading rooms. For example, at Shiqiang Market’s bookstore, there are special reading activities for children. They learn about vegetables and the value of work through stories and hands-on learning activities. In Hangzhou, there is a new bookstore named “Chenxin”. There, people can read short parts of 108 new books. It also lets people exchange vegetables for book samples, or trade in old books for fresh vegetables.
Quiet bookstores and busy markets seem so different, but now they blend together. They make reading a part of daily life and give markets a more cultural atmosphere.
