The Dragon Boat Festival has a long history of more than 2,000 years. Over this long history, many traditions have developed.
Dragon boat racing is one of the most important traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival. The activity is widely held across China, where there are many rivers and lakes. The dragon boat is a human-powered boat that is shaped and painted like a Chinese dragon. There are usually 18 to 22 people in a standard dragon boat for races.
Eating zongzi is an essential part of celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival. Zongzi is usually wrapped in reed leaves and can have different fillings. While names vary by region, people in southern China prefer the salty one, and those in northern China usually go for the sweet one.
During the Dragon Boat Festival, people often hang plants like calamus and mugwort 1 on their doors. This is done because these plants have a pleasant smell and are believed to help prevent diseases.
During the Dragon Boat Festival, children often wear sachets to keep away bad spirits and illness. Filled with herbs, these sachets come in various shapes and are usually beautifully decorated.
