China’s new space robot is a good miner1

In movies, we can see robots fly into space to find treasure. Now, scientists in China have made a special robot to do this in real life too!

The space mining robot is the first of its kind in China, said People’s Daily. Scientists at the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) made it. The robot is about 40 centimeters across and about 30 kilograms heavy. It uses electricity2 to move around.

Mining in space is hard because there is not much gravity3. On Earth, gravity helps keep tools and rocks in place. But in space, tools and rocks can float around.

To help with the problem, the CUMT team got ideas from nature. They watched how insects4 move and woodpeckers5 climb trees. They gave the robot three wheel legs to move fast on asteroids6. The robot also has three claw legs. They help it hold on tight, so it does not float away. This way, the robot can “walk” on asteroids with little difficulty.

The team tested it in pretend lunar soil7. The robot did well. It could walk, hold itself in place, and even take samples8.
