Song Lingdong was born in August 1990 in Caoxian, Shandong Province. His journey to space began with a dream. At the age of 13, Song, like many of his peers, was deeply impressed by the successful launch of Shenzhou V. That moment planted a seed of aspiration1 in his young heart. After graduating from high school, he became a fighter pilot. During his time as a pilot, he successfully completed many important tasks.
In 2020, Song Lingdong was selected as a member of the third batch2 of Chinese astronauts.
In 2024, Song Lingdong was chosen as a member of the Shenzhou XIX crew. On October 30, 2024, Shenzhou XIX was successfully launched. During the six-month space mission3, Song Lingdong was mainly responsible for station management, equipment maintenance4, and carried out extravehicular activities5 as scheduled. He became the first post-90s male astronaut to conduct extravehicular activities in China, setting a new record for the duration of extravehicular activities by Chinese astronauts.
As we look up at the stars, we can be proud that there is a young hero like Song Lingdong representing China’s pursuit of the unknown in space.
