【同中求异】instead, instead of

     instead作副词，置于句首时常用逗号与后面的内容隔开，也可以直接放在句末。instead在顺接句子中意为“代替”，而在转折句子中意为“然而”。如：

　　If you cannot go, let him go instead.

　　如果你不能去，让他替你去。

　　He didn’t answer me, instead, he asked me another question.

　　他没有回答我，反而问了我另外一个问题。

　　instead of是介词短语，意为“而不是；代替”，其后常跟名词、代词、介词短语、动名词等。如：

　　His success plays his luck instead of his skill.

　　他的成功靠的是运气而不是技能。

　　It felt like I’d had two babies instead of one.

　　我感觉像是有两个孩子，而不是一个。

　　We’ll go there on foot instead of by bus.

　　我们将步行去那儿而不是乘公共汽车。

　　I have to finish my work instead of going out.

　　我必须完成工作，不能外出。
