A respected official

Gao Chai served as an official in the Kingdoms of Lu and Wei four times. However, he never used his official position to make money for himself or for any personal advantage. Also, he often thought of others before himself. For these reasons, he was loved and respected by people.

When Gao Chai worked in the Wei Kingdom, the prime minister liked him very much. He once gave Gao Chai a beautiful piece of green jade as a gift. The jade was very valuable, but Gao Chai did not keep it for himself. Instead, he gave the jade to his master, Confucius. When Confucius learned the gift was from the prime minister, he was very proud of his student. The gift showed that Gao Chai did a good job in the Wei Kingdom and that the prime minister was pleased with him.

Another time, the King of the Wei Kingdom presented Gao Chai with a carriage1. He gave it to his master again because Confucius only had an ox-drawn cart2 which traveled much slower than a carriage.

Later Gao Chai left his job as a government official. He became a teacher, just like his master Confucius. In the end, he had students from all over the country.
