To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by US author Harper Lee and printed in 1960. The story is set in the southern US, where the author grew up.
The main character is a lawyer named Atticus Finch. In the 1960s, many white people there looked down on black people, but Finch didn’t. One day he meets Tom Robinson, a black man. Robinson is wrongly accused of (被指控) hurting a white woman. Finch wants to defend (为……辩护) him. Many people try to stop Finch from doing his job. Still, Finch fights to find the truth, even though there are threats (威胁) against him. He proves that Robinson is innocent (无辜的). Finch’s children, Scout and Jem, grow up and see the racial prejudice around them. They come to understand the importance of looking at the world with an unprejudiced mind.
The author Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama in 1926. In her childhood, she, like Scout and Jem, learned about racial prejudice and the damage it did. To kill a Mockingbird was her first and only novel. It took her seven years to write.
